1994 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo - Back for More
1994 Toyota Supra Twin Turbo Modified
For the second time, Mani Jayasinghe's Supra TT places its wide footprint in the Ultimate Street Car Challenge. Last year, with the car remarkably stock, Jayasinghe turned more than a few heads with a strong overall finish, winning both the autocross and drag race competitions in his class. This year, Jayasinghe is packing some heavy horsepower, thanks to a T66 single turbo conversion. After a car dropped out last minute with mechanical problems, Jayasinghe, being the good sport he is, didn't sleep for three nights to prepare his Supra for our event. With the exception of AEM adjustable cam gears, the internals of the holy shrine of big import horsepower, the 2JZ-GTE, is stock. Different from last year is the RPS single turbo conversion and custom fuel delivery set-up. The RPS kit uses an RPS manifold, Innovative Turbo Systems T66 turbo and an Innovative Turbo wastegate. Installed concurrently were a 3-inch RPS mid and downpipe. Copious amounts of spent combustibles exit through a 3-inch Random Technologies catalytic converter and 3.5-inch HKS Super Dragger exhaust. Feeding this hungry engine is essentially a doubled-up stock fuel system. Run in parallel are two Supra fuel pumps, separate fuel lines and filters. These feed through a Paxton fuel pressure regulator and into a modified HKS fuel rail, which accepts flow at both ends and locates the return line in the middle. To deal with the ever-changing state of his engine modifications, Jayasinghe uses an A'pexi AFC to meter adequate amounts of fuel and air and an A'pexi AVCR to administer his boost greed. Unlike many Supras whose bragging rights are limited to dyno number and straight-line contests, Jayasinghe has figured out what it takes to munch autocross and track courses with his big TT-he's a regular at NASA events, Open Track time trials, and Porsche Club autocrosses. Rather than setting up the suspension with available Japanese coil-overs, Jayasinghe custom-made his own suspension system to ensure a specific dynamic behavior. After revalving a set of KYB AGX adjustable shocks, Jayasinghe fitted Bilstein sleeves on their bodies. Modified stock spring perches were used to locate the Eibach ERS race springs, 650-lbs/inch in the front, 375-lbs/inch in the rear. Doing their best to implement all of the horsepower on tap while suspending the Supra's substantial mass are very large, very sticky Kumho Victoracers wrapped around Simmons 17-inch wheels. Jayasinghe found the stock Supra brakes to be sufficient even for heavy track use, and upgraded the system only with TRD braided stainless-steel lines. Jayasinghe, well known within the Supra community for both his dedication to its cause and attendance at the many and regular Supra events, performed subtle aesthetic enhancements. A Top Secret front bumper helps smooth airflow and a Rod Millen Motorsports rear carbon fiber wing provides high-speed stability. Custom hood ventilation was accomplished by handing templates to Gardena Body Shop, which handled the cutting, fitting and painting of all body parts. With the same effective handling package he had last year, combined with a bunch more horsepower, there's no doubt this well-rendered TT will be a serious contender for the "ultimate" title this time around. 1994 {{{{{{Toyota Supra}}}}}} TTChassisChassis Code: JZA81 DrivetrainLayout: Front engine, rear-wheel driveDrivetrain Modifications:TRD clutch kit SuspensionFront:Custom KYB coil-overs, Eibach springs (650-lbs/inch)Rear:Custom KYB coil-overs, Eibach springs (375-lbs/inch) BrakesFront:TRD stainless-steel brake linesRear:TRD stainless-steel brake lines ExternalWheels:Simmons, 9.5 X 17-inch front, 10.5 x 17-inch rearTires:275/40R-17 Kumho Victoracer V700 front, 315/35R-17 Kumho Victoracer V700 rearBody:Rod Millen carbon fiber wing, Top Secret front bumper, custom hood work and paint |
