Indiana May Soon Allow Motorcycle Sales OnSundays?

If this shop was in Indiana and you wanted to purchase a Duc on Sunday, you’d have to wait ’til Monday. But a change in Indiana state law may soon allow sales of motorcycles on Sundays.

File this one under odd things most people didn’t know about motorcycling. It’s not uncommon to hear that some states or various counties within a state have certain restrictions, or prohibit altogether, the sale of alcohol on Sundays. However, Indiana has a law on the books (an old “blue law”) that prohibits the sale of motor vehicles on Sundays. A person selling on Sundays is guilty of a Class B misdemeanor. But with respect to bike sales the law will likely change soon.

Indiana Senate Bill 0192 would lift the ban on selling bikes on the seventh day of the week.

The bill’s co-author, Senator Jean Leising (R), cites current economic woes for excluding bike sales from the law. Leising is quoted in a report on www.eaglecountryonline.com, saying, “Statewide, Indiana has more than 400 motorcycle dealerships. This means potentially thousands of residents are connected to this industry in some way and, during times when families are struggling financially, we should do everything we can to give the industry a boost and help create more jobs or increased wages.”

The bill recently passed the state House in a 68-31 vote, and if it clears the Senate, Gov. Mitch Daniels will likely sign the bill into law, which will then go into effect on July 1 of this year.

Evolve Electric-powered Xenon Custom Motorcycle Up for Auction

Electric scooter company Evolve is donating for auction one of its wild-looking Xenon electric motorcycles — a dead ringer for the light cycles seen in TRON: Legacy — with proceeds going to benefit Global Green USA (www.globalgreen.org).

Designed by Parker Brothers Custom Choppers, the Evolve Xenon is powered by a 60ah custom li-ion battery providing a claimed range of 30 miles, with a 3-hour charge time. A Xenon XR is available with a 120ah battery providing a claimed range of 100 miles and a 4-hour charge time. The Xenon’s bodywork/frame is crafted from fiberglass, with functioning LED tape light trim on the body as well as on the perimeter of the bike’s 32-inch hub-less wheels.

The auction winner will get to choose the color of the LED light tape as well as the size of the battery powering the Xenon. However, completion of the auctioned Xenon will take 90 days, with the winner pay shipping costs. And if the winner lives in either California or New York they’ll have to pay applicable sales tax. The 60ah Xenon has an MSRP of ,000, while the XR model retails for an additional ,000.

The auction is currently open and is to close Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at 3:00 pm EDT. To learn more and/or bid, visit: http://www.charitybuzz.com/catalog_items/294327

The heart of Evolve’s product line consists mostly of scooters, with the Xenon the only “motorcycle,” but the company is also working on a more traditional, naked-style two-wheeler called, Lithium.

AMA Supercross: 2012 Atlanta Results

Ryan Villopoto‘s winning streak was snapped, KTM scored its second series win and Cole Seely impressed as an injury replacement for Trey Canard as the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship landed in Atlanta, Ga.

Racing for the American Honda Muscle Milk team, Seely nabbed the holeshot and led the opening seven laps before finally being overtaken by Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey.

Monster Energy Kawasaki‘s Villopoto had a poor start by his standards, finishing the first lap in sixth place. Also off to a slow start was JGRMX Yamaha‘s James Stewart who was ninth after the first lap.

Villopoto and Stewart soon began to gain ground however. Villopoto was back in a podium position by Lap 5 while Stewart also surged through the pack. Villopoto passed Seely on Lap 11 and took aim at Dungey but had to settle for second by 2.727 seconds. Stewart moved into third place on Lap 12 and finished there, over 20 seconds back of Dungey.

Seely finished 36 seconds back in sixth place after leading the first third of the race. Currently third in the Supercross Lites West division, Seely is using the opportunity to show what he can do in the premiere class.

After eight rounds, Villopoto remains in the lead at 180 points. Dungey cut three points off Villopoto’s lead to sit second at 170 points. Stewart’s podium pushed him into third place past Chad Reed whose season is over after an injury the previous round in Texas. With just 136 points however, and two skilled racers ahead of him, Stewart has a difficult challenge ahead of him if he hopes to contend for the championship.

The 2012 AMA Supercross season continues March 3 in St. Louis, Mo.

Indonesian Round Added to World Superbike Championship in 2013

Infront Motorsports announced it has signed a five-year contract with Indonesia’s Sentul International Circuit to host the World Superbike Championship.

Located in Babakan Madang, Indonesia, the Sentul circuit will rejoin the WSBK circus in 2013. The circuit last hosted WSBK from 1994 to 1997. With the Asian market driving worldwide motorcycle sales, a return to Indonesia was inevitable.

“We are proud of the growth of the Superbike calendar, which thanks to the inclusion of the latest rounds is obtaining a presence in countries of major importance for the development of our championship on a sporting and commercial level,” says Maurizio Flammini, president of Infront Motor Sports, WSBK’s promoter. “Indonesia today is a country with the largest growth factors: GDP is more than one trillion dollars, with a 2011 growth of more than 6%, and the sale of bikes widely exceeds 7 million units per year.”

Indonesia follows the addition of Russia to the WSBK Championship. Moscow hosts its first WSBK round Aug. 26. Infront Motorsports isn’t done negotiating with new circuits however, with India, the world’s second largest motorcycle market the next target.

“We are also negotiating with the Buddh International Circuit in India, where the Formula 1 race was recently held, in order to complete a presence in Asia that in this case will be absolutely extraordinary,” says Flammini.

Honda Tuner Mugen Motorsports to Enter 2012 TT Zero Electric Race at Isle of Man

Engine tuning company Mugen Motorsports announced it will compete in the TT Zero electric motorcycle race at the 2012 Isle of Man TT.

Though not officially a Honda company,Mugen was founded by Hirotoshi Honda, son of Honda founder Soichiro Honda, and the company is best known for its work as an engine tuner and parts maker for Honda vehicles. The Mugen entry to the TT Zero represents possibly the closest connection so far between a traditional motorcycle OEM and the relatively new realm of electric motorcycle racing.

“We are keen to use this excellent event to educate and prepare the engineers of the next generation for the use of future technology,” says Satoshi Katsumata of Team Mugen. “We are very excited about adding to the long history of Japanese manufacturers on the Isle of Man.”

Mugen has a history of racing success, tuning four Formula 1 Grand Prix race winners. Though Mugen is better known for its work with Honda’s cars, it does have experience working with motorcycles, as illustrated by the Mugen-modified Honda CBR250R pictured above. Mugen has also fielded a team in the Suzuka 8 Hour endurance race, so motorcycle racing is not new for the tuning house.

Electric racing is another matter however, especially considering the TT Zero’s single-lap time trial format. Nevertheless, Mugen will enter an all-new electric motorcycle. Given the company’s close association with Honda, we’re hoping Mugen’s electric racer will look like the Honda RC-E electric sportbike concept unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.
